TALI COHEN-FLANTZ
Living in the coastal and sub-tropical Northern Rivers, my work reflects the luscious bushland and expansive coast line around me. Experimenting with different clay bodies and techniques of making, I formulate my own glazes in my studio using natural minerals and oxides. My use of glazes, textures and surfaces play with the themes of passing time and our relationship with nature.
By observing nature and spending time in it, I connect to the rhythms of life, the elements and to the earth. Fire, water, air and earth work together to impact both glazes and clay and in turn the end results of the artworks. Firing involves an element of surprise where the results are not always as expected. Nature and the elements affect each artwork, just as they affect our lives, especially in this moment where climate change is impacting us so profoundly.
My work is a way of communicating our shared relationship with the natural world, where both sides take part and where nature mirrors back at us.
